Benefits for brothers and sisters

8. Brothers and sisters attending one facility – What benefits does that bring?

Under one roof

Child day care centres which combine various forms of care bring nursery and kindergarten children, and even primary school pupils attending an afternoon care centre, together under one roof. The benefits of such centres are manifold. Brothers and sisters, for example, are able to grow up together, and parents have only one journey to make. First and foremost, however, the advantages are to be seen in the long-term continuity for the children's development.

Mixed-age groups

Mixed-age or family groups offer the children a whole variety of additional social experiences, and also contribute significantly to intellectual development. Where children of different ages grow up and play together, each individual will find friends and partners corresponding optimally to his or her own abilities and development level.

Knowing that children learn from other children, mixed-age groups are a good basis for the development of knowledge and language. The children learn to respect and help each other, and discover »role models« as guidance. The work in a mixed-age group demands particular sensibility on the part of the teachers.

Room and garden concepts

Development specifics of the children are taken into account in the designing of rooms and learning topics for the different age groups. The cooperation between the various teachers is carefully coordinated during the day, to ensure that all the children can be offered activities catering to their needs.

The rooms for children of different ages are furnished flexibly according to the relevant purposes and themes. Diversely decorated functional rooms and designated areas of the grounds offer age-specific spaces for play and experience. Examples which could be mentioned here are the homework room for the older children, or the sleeping room with its beds and cots for the youngest ones.
