City Council
The Dresden City Council is the elected representation of the citizens of Dresden. According to the Saxon Municipal Code, the Mayor of Dresden chairs the City Council.
The City Council lays down the principles for the administration of the state capital of Dresden and decides on all matters relating to the state capital of Dresden, unless the Lord Mayor is responsible by law or the City Council has delegated certain matters to him or her.
On 9 June 2024, the people of Dresden elected their new city council.
With its resolutions, the City Council can issue orders to the Lord Mayor as head of the administration and create applicable city law by enacting statutes and ordinances. City Council meetings usually take place every three weeks.
The City Council cannot delegate particularly important tasks, e.g. the enactment of bylaws, to its decision-making committees. A term of office is five years.
