Film
Until 1991, Dresden was the most important location for the production of animated films in the German-speaking countries. The German Institute for Animated Films keeps and shows the stock of animated films made by DEFA in the Technical Collections Museum of the City of Dresden.
The history of film culture is also linked with the development and production of Ernemann cameras and projection equipment in Dresden.
Today, with four multiplex cinemas and six independent cinemas, Dresden does not only offer a high capacity, above all it is the wide range of films shown which make Dresden such an attractive place for the friends of high-quality films.
The International Short Film Festival is among the most important festivals of its kind in Germany.
The Film Nights by the bank of the River Elbe, which attract more than 100,000 people every summer, form an interesting link between film culture, river scenery and Baroque architecture.
The French, Scandinavian, Latin American and Eastern European film days find an exceptionally open-minded and demanding audience in Dresden.
