Monument preservation

Dresden is not only rich in famous sights, there are also around 13,000 cultural monuments and 8 districts under general preservation orders to be found within its boundaries.

The majority of these cultural monuments are looked after by the Office for Culture and Monument Preservation of the City of Dresden. The department responsible for monument preservation organises regular public meetings and lectures on various aspects of the topic, arranges tours of selected areas, subject to prior appointment, and presents its activities within the framework of various exhibitions.

Dresden also participates in the »European Heritage Day« on the second Sunday in September each year, for which coordination and organisation are placed in the hands of the Office for Culture and Monument Preservation.

The Office for Culture and Monument Preservation publishes books and pamphlets on topics of relevance to monument preservation at irregular intervals, and also contributes topical articles to the local press and media.

The library and archives are opened to interested users by prior appointment.

This diversity of activities would be unthinkable without the constant support of countless monument preservation volunteers, who assist the Office for Culture and Monument Preservation in the elaboration, implementation and monitoring of corresponding measures.

In the lapidarium of the Office for Culture and Monument Preservation, architectural elements salvaged mainly from buildings and gardens destroyed during the Second World War are kept, catalogued and prepared for possible re-use.

The Office for Culture and Monument Preservation works together with numerous regional institutions and initiatives, who themselves provide for a broad spectrum of contributions to public awareness for monument preservation.
