Suburban railways (S-Bahn)

Three Dresden suburban railway services connect the city with the larger neighbouring communities of the upper Elbe valley region:

S1
Meissen to Schöna via Pirna (Saxon Switzerland)
S2
Pirna to Dresden Airport via Dresden-Hauptbahnhof (city centre)
S3
Dresden-Hauptbahnhof (city centre) to Tharandt and Freiberg via Freital

The already immense importance of the so-called »S-Bahn« system for local public transport in the city is still to be expanded in the coming years through modernisation and line construction work and through additions of new stopping points to the suburban network.
