Child minders

A popular alternative

One popular alternative to day care in a nursery centre or kindergarten is to place children in the care of a child minder. This form of care can be matched most flexibly to current and individual family circumstances.

Child minders are usually qualified nursery teachers who work on an independent basis and through their profession have considerable experience in the field of early years child development. They thus have full understanding for the specific needs of children from different age groups.

A child minder offers optimum care in a family environment, and in an ideal case will already be looking after other children, possibly even together with her own children. The children grow up in a loving family atmosphere, as brothers and sisters, so to speak, with the other children of their day family.

Studies have frequently shown that this arrangement is of benefit to both sides: There are many more options for play in a group, and the children can learn from each other. Early contact to other children of all ages is also known to be positive for the development of social skills.

Where do the children spend the day?

There are many different variants of child minder care. Normally, the children are brought to the child minder, as she will often be looking after several children. The home setting is tailored specifically to the needs of the children. In other words, they can spend their day in an environment with toys appropriate for their age, quiet corners in which to learn, and cosy places to rest or sleep.

Another possibility is for the child minder to come to the family and to care for the children in their familiar environment.

This form of care is especially favourable for young infants. The parents pay the same fees for day care as for care in a creche. Parents with low income, furthermore, can apply for the fees to be reduced or even waived completely.
