Advice for parents-to-be

The birth of a child is one of the most moving moments in the life of any couple.

Dresden can point to a wide variety of institutions and services with all the necessary facilities for stress-free and uncomplicated births, and it is the free personal decision of the parents-to-be, where and how they wish their child to be born.

You could choose, for example, to give birth

  • in a maternity clinic,
  • as an out-patient in a clinic,
  • in one of the city's so-called birth centres, or
  • at home.

For those who choose the first option, the contact details of three city hospitals are listed in the right-hand column, standing as examples for many other possibilities.

Dresden also possesses a number of church-run clinics and hospitals, such as the "St. Josephstift" or the "Diakonissenkrankenhaus".

Over the past ten years or so, furthermore, various private clinics and birth centres have been established, offering out-patient births under the supervision of a midwife in an almost home-like atmosphere.
