DRESDEN EXCELLENCE AWARD

Important information

The Dresden Excellence Award (DEA) call will be suspended this year in order to carry out the necessary revision of the underlying funding guidelines for 2025. Once the new funding guidelines come into force, we will resume the call for entries for the City of Dresden Science Award in 2025. Your work that was created this year can also be submitted next year.

The DRESDEN EXCELLENCE AWARD recognises outstanding scientific work performed in Dresden. This work may be specialised or interdisciplinary – in all fields of science. Granted by the City of Dresden, the award also focuses on excellent applications demonstrating particular relevance and vision for Dresden’s urban development and society.

The award is aimed at strengthening Dresden’s image as a scientific hub. It pays tribute to authors of outstanding scientific theses, who are of key importance to the City of Dresden and its profile as a centre of science.

Who can apply to DEA?

Applications are open to natural persons who, as the authors of a scientific thesis, have successfully completed a

Bachelors
"Diplom"/ Masters
PhD or
Post-doctoral professorship

course at one of Dresden’s universities or the University of Cooperative Education (Berufsakademie Sachsen - Staatliche Studienakademie Dresden).

Your application for the DRESDEN EXCELLENCE AWARD

Application
At this point we will inform you when authors of excellent scientific theses can submit their applications via the online form in German and English.

CV, portrait photo and successfully completed thesis, including affidavit regarding authorship and sources, and results of evaluations/reports as PDF, Concise, well justified application; author involvement; importance for boosting the profile of the work coming out of Dresden
References
The applicant may also submit letters of recommendation from third parties/supervisors (PDF upload in the application form in the section covering results of evaluations/reports).
Assessment
All complete applications will be jointly assessed by a jury based on set assessment criteria. The jury shall be presided over by the Lord Mayor of Dresden. The jury’s recommendation will be presented to the Business Development Committee for the final decision.

- Outstanding scientific thesis (Final grade of 1,0/"summa cum laude")
- Concise, well justified application

- importance for boosting the profile of the work coming out of Dresden

Prize trophy

The science award is conferred by the City of Dresden in the form of a monetary prize worth a total of 30,000 Euros, split into individual prizes. DRESDEN EXCELLENCE AWARDS for outstanding theses by Dresden students are granted annually for each academic degree, i.e. one award each for

an outstanding Bachelor’s thesis (worth EUR 3,000)
an outstanding Masters/Diplom thesis (worth EUR 6,000)
an outstanding PhD (worth EUR 9,000), and
an outstanding post-doctoral professorship (worth EUR 12,000).

The award is presented directly to the recipient in accordance with the prize-giving proceedings, the prize stated, and the applicant’s personal details. Claims cannot be assigned to third parties.

Data processing and privacy statement

Your personal data included in the application is required by the office for economic development to process the application. In compliance with current data protection legislation, it shall be processed only for the stated purpose of reviewing and deciding on the award of the prize with regard to your application. The personal data shall also be forwarded to the jury members involved in the processing of the application, who in turn are obliged to comply with the data protection regulations. The personal application data shall not be passed on to third parties. The personal application data shall be deleted as soon as the corresponding time periods have elapsed in accordance with the provisions of document regulations and is no longer required for the fulfilment of the tasks of the storing office. For further information, please refer to the privacy statement of the state capital Dresden, which hereby becomes the subject of the declaration of consent.

It is not possible to process the application without your consent to electronic data processing and to the inclusion of jury members!

I agree to the electronic processing of my data by the office for economic development and that the data shall be forwarded to the jury members involved.

Declaration of consent for the use of photographs of persons

I also agree that my submitted portrait photo and photos recorded on the occasion of the award ceremony 'AWARD' (single picture of the participant and group pictures of the award ceremony) shall be used for the public relations work of the state capital Dresden on the topic of the Dresden Excellence Award and Dresden as a science location.

I agree with the following publications of the state capital Dresden:

Printed matter shall also be published on the city's website (dresden.de).

Brochures, postcards, posters, Dresden official journal, municipal website (dresden.de) and social media

I agree that my photo may be used for advertising purposes for the AWARD.

I agree that my photo may be passed on to third parties (e.g., press/online media) for publication.

Note: The photos may also be edited as part of these publications.

I agree with the mention of

First name, last name, profession, department, place of work, place of residence in connection with the publication of my photo.

I will not receive any remuneration.

Revocation

You may revoke this permission to publish at any time, in whole or in part, but not with retroactive effect. Please declare your revocation in writing.

If a group photo is published, later revocation of a single person does not mean that a photo has to be removed.

Publications on the Internet/data protection notice:

When published on the Internet, personal data (including photos) can be retrieved and stored worldwide. Therefore, the data can also be found via so-called "search engines". The possibility cannot be ruled out that other persons or companies may link the data with other personal data available on the Internet and thereby create a personality profile, modify the data or use it for other purposes.
