Historic Green Vault
The Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) is renowned worldwide as one of the richest treasure chambers in Europe. Here, between 1723 and 1730, Augustus the Strong realized the vision of a Baroque Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) as an expression of his wealth and power. After extensive restoration work completed in 2006, this treasury – badly damaged in the Second World War – once again shines in its former glory. Some 3,000 masterpieces of the jeweller’s and goldsmith’s art, precious objects in amber and ivory, jewelled vessels and bronze statuettes of high artistic quality are displayed not in glass cases but on consoles in front of richly decorated, mirrored walls. The highlight is the Jewel Room with the sets of jewels that belonged to Augustus the Strong and his son, a unique historical collection.
