Art

Dresden's reputation as a top European city of art has to a great extent been formed by the work of visual artists.
Caspar David Friedrich, the »Brücke« group of artists as well as a number of contemporary artists, some of whom left the G.D.R., each stand for new forms and ways of artistic expression.

At the moment, there are about 600 visual artists working in Dresden.
It is particularly interesting to keep track of the two streams of artistic development: Those artists who concern themselves with the local art of painting as practised in the 20th century, and who often attract attention from beyond Saxony, present their works in solo and group exhibitions in the city's museums and galleries.
On the other hand, a movement of young artists has been developing in recent years. They have succeeded in establishing new positions and are increasingly represented in private and public galleries. Most of these artists have graduated from the Dresden Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Academy of Fine Arts).

Recently an online-catalogue with all artists from Dresden has been composed and it is still being extended. You can find the artists and artist groups in alphabetical order with a brief biography as well as up to 5 illustrations. The address is written on the right site of this page.

Dresden's importance as a centre for exhibitions dates back to 1897.
Apart from the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (State Art Collections) and the municipal museums and galleries, there are now around 25 private galleries whose exhibitions cover the whole range of contemporary art.
